The Future Of PMAC

PMAC has big things planned and we need your support. PMAC is in the beginning stages of a crowdfunding campaign to make our move from 75 Albany St to our new home at 973 Islington St a reality. Less than one mile from our current home this former mattress warehouse is double the size of our current space. The building renovation will be designed by DeStefano Architects and once completed it will allow us to achieve PMAC's full vision with greatly expanded arts and music classrooms, a digital studio and more.

Now is the time - PMAC must move this year. Please make a donation to support PMAC's new building construction and move. If you have questions about this project, or want to learn more about how to support PMAC, contact Executive Director Russ Grazier at russ@pmaconline.org. Thank you for your support!

PHASE ONE In 2011 PMAC was awarded a $500,000 Tax Credit Grant for this project. To date, PMAC has sold $293,000 to 21 local businesses. We are continuing to sell tax credits as we launch PHASE TWO. To learn more about how YOUR company can participate in the Tax Credit program and support this project contact Executive Director Russ Grazier.

PHASE ONE SUPPORTS:
  • Design and Build-out Construction of 973 Islington Street

GOAL $500,000     RAISED TO DATE $293,000

PHASE TWO Crowdfunding: every contribution gets us closer.  The idea is that EVERYONE can participate, and there will be special rewards for getting involved. Give $10, $100, $500, $1,000 or more if you are able. Or become a micro-funder: make a recurring monthly donation for a year or longer to have a powerful impact. Your support will make this happen. Even $10 can make a difference, so for every gift of $10 or more, we have a reward for you. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.

PHASE TWO funds will provide the support needed to complete construction on the new facility, and provide everything PMAC needs to move and begin operating at the new site. To allow donors to focus their funds in one gift, a small portion (16%) of Campaign for the Future gifts will support PMAC programs during this period of transition so we can continue to offer the best possible music and arts education opportunities for the community.

PHASE TWO SUPPORTS:
  • Completion of build-out construction at 973 Islington St.
  • Furnishing for new building
  • Costs associated with moving PMAC from 75 Albany St. to 973 Islington St.
  • Annual fund to support operations during campaign
  • Retirement of debt
  • Capital Campaign Expenses

GOAL $250,000     RAISED TO DATE $46,886

PHASE THREE Foundations, Grants and Room Naming Donors.  The final phase our Campaign for the Future will support the purchase of 973 Islington Street. We currently have a 10-year renewable lease with an option to purchase. Our goal is to purchase the building in the first three years of our lease. We will accomplish this through room naming opportunities for donors, grants, and support from arts foundations. Additional funds in this phase will be dedicated to securing PMAC's future, and strengthening PMAC's long-term financial position. This supports our strategic goal to ensure a sustainable organization for future generations. To learn more or to get involved in phase three contact Executive Director Russ Grazier.

PHASE THREE SUPPORTS:
  • Purchase of building at 973 Islington St.
  • Annual fund to support operations during campaign
  • Reserve funds for PMAC to secure our future
  • Retirement of debt
  • Capital Campaign Expenses

GOAL $1.3 million     RAISED TO DATE $30,000

On Wednesday, February 13th, members of Krempels center and members of the community welcomed a presentation by board certified music therapist Ginna Macdonald and art therapist Laura Beaudoin of PMAC. This event was the culmination of 18 weeks of music and art therapy sessions provided to members of Krempels Center by PMAC, a partnership made possible by an Arts In Healthcare grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.

Attendees were able to participate in art and music therapy activities, view the artwork that members had created, and hear about some of the techniques and goals of art and music therapy. Check out some of the photos:

PMAC AND KREMPELS: HEALING THROUGH THE ARTS

On Wednesday February 13 at 1pm Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC) and Krempels Center will welcome the public to a unique presentation titled “Healing Through The Arts.” The culminating event of a music and art therapy collaboration between PMAC and Krempels Center, this presentation will be led by board certified PMAC music therapist Ginna Macdonald and PMAC art therapist Laura Beaudoin. The one-hour event is free and open to the public and will take place at Krempels Center on Community Campus, located at 100 Campus Drive, Suite 24 in Portsmouth.

In the summer of 2012 PMAC was awarded an Arts In Healthcare grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts to provide brain injury survivors at Krempels Center with 12 music therapy sessions and 6 art therapy sessions. PMAC fundraised in the community to match the grant funds and launch the program. “Our processes focus on mindfulness, connecting the media with stories and emotions, and using art as a metaphor for the experiences of adults living with brain injury,” says Beaudoin. “The participants are engaged, focused, thoughtful and express great gratitude for the creative outlet and opportunity. It has been a very moving experience.”

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can result in problems with communication, memory and other cognitive issues, as well as physical and emotional issues. Brain injury survivors can experience isolation, loss of life roles, and an inability to return to their prior interests. Art and music have been shown to be effective tools in bridging social gaps and make lasting changes in the lives of people living with brain injury.

Krempels Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with brain injury from trauma, tumor or stroke. Located at the Community Campus in Portsmouth, Krempels Center offers programs that engage individuals in meaningful and productive experiences and provides ongoing support and resources to those impacted by brain injury. In addition, the organization’s community outreach initiative provides education to the public about brain injury and brain injury prevention.  For more on Krempels Center, please visit www.krempelscenter.org

Session II: Drawing and Design with Roger Goldenberg

PMAC's Roger Goldenberg will lead this drawing course for adults beginning March 12th.  This course will reinforce fundamental drawing skills with emphasis on ink, pen and brush media (other media may be addressed). As the drawings advance in complexity, greater attention will focus on design and invention, especially regarding contrast and drama.

From 1995–1999 Roger served as adjunct painting and drawing instructor at UNH. Subsequently, he taught a life drawing class for the New Hampshire Institute of Art at Sanctuary Arts, Eliot, ME and a series of woodcut and monotype printmaking workshops at the AVA Gallery and Arts Center in Lebanon, NH and at his studio. In 2012 Roger received his third prestigious Artist Entrepreneur Grant Award from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts to help launch statewide the visual jazz performance “In Ears ‘n’ Eyes.” This collaborative performance involves many of the Seacoast star jazz musicians, including PMAC faculty Matt Langley, Mike Effenberger, Eric Klaxton, Chris Klaxton and Jim Rudolph. Roger’s visual jazz pieces can be seen in collections both nationally and abroad. He maintains a studio at The Button Factory in Portsmouth. Adult Arts Thrive at PMAC

While many think of music and art classes as youth territory, PMAC is proving that arts education and expression is as much for adults as it is for children and teens. Whether one is a seasoned or beginner artist or musician, PMAC has a wide array of vibrant and engaging adult programs for all levels.

"The art classes at PMAC have been an opportunity to revisit a great joy in my life,” says adult student Christina Rodgers. “When I am in class, I am devoted fully to drawing, painting, printmaking--expressing myself in a creative way-- which is not something I always give myself permission to do.” Teacher and artist Roger Goldenberg notes that it is not uncommon for people to abandon their passion for making art upon entering adulthood. “Returning now to explore art-making is especially satisfying because they share their rich life experience in the classroom and are rewarded by filling an unexplored missing piece of themselves,”says Goldenberg.

Alongside its numerous art offerings PMAC boasts a large number of adult music ensemble opportunities.  For those new to their instrument there is The New Horizons Band and Beginner Band and the Adult Chamber Strings which offer beginner and intermediate level band experience for adults. For those well versed in their instrument there is a range of options from a Bluegrass Ensemble to Jazz Combos and the Brewery Lane Big Band, with many more in between.

“Playing in the PMAC band and flute choir has been an amazing experience. These ensembles have boosted my music skills and confidence in playing with others, as well as provided a fun evening away from home,” says student Kristin Peto, “I feel I would truly be lost if I didn't have these opportunities to play.”  PMAC’s adult ensembles are open to new members year round. Lessons are also available for those who are interested in joining in an ensemble but have no previous experience with an instrument.

With a record number of adult students already enrolling, PMAC is looking forward to offering even more adult classes upon moving to a new facility on Islington Street this summer. "Our growing faculty is creating a wealth of arts education opportunities for adults,” says executive director Russ Grazier, “and when we relocate to our new Islington Street building in Summer 2013, we'll be able to offer even more."

To review PMAC’s full schedule of adult programs visit www.pmaconline.org or call 603-431-4278 to request a catalog. PMAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the greater Seacoast region.
