Session II: Drawing and Design with Roger Goldenberg

PMAC's Roger Goldenberg will lead this drawing course for adults beginning March 12th.  This course will reinforce fundamental drawing skills with emphasis on ink, pen and brush media (other media may be addressed). As the drawings advance in complexity, greater attention will focus on design and invention, especially regarding contrast and drama. 

From 1995–1999 Roger served as adjunct painting and drawing instructor at UNH. Subsequently, he taught a life drawing class for the New Hampshire Institute of Art at Sanctuary Arts, Eliot, ME and a series of woodcut and monotype printmaking workshops at the AVA Gallery and Arts Center in Lebanon, NH and at his studio. In 2012 Roger received his third prestigious Artist Entrepreneur Grant Award from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts to help launch statewide the visual jazz performance “In Ears ‘n’ Eyes.” This collaborative performance involves many of the Seacoast star jazz musicians, including PMAC faculty Matt Langley, Mike Effenberger, Eric Klaxton, Chris Klaxton and Jim Rudolph. Adult Arts Thrive at PMAC

While many think of music and art classes as youth territory, PMAC is proving that arts education and expression is as much for adults as it is for children and teens. Whether one is a seasoned or beginner artist or musician, PMAC has a wide array of vibrant and engaging adult programs for all levels.

"The art classes at PMAC have been an opportunity to revisit a great joy in my life,” says adult student Christina Rodgers. “When I am in class, I am devoted fully to drawing, painting, printmaking--expressing myself in a creative way-- which is not something I always give myself permission to do.” Teacher and artist Roger Goldenberg notes that it is not uncommon for people to abandon their passion for making art upon entering adulthood. “Returning now to explore art-making is especially satisfying because they share their rich life experience in the classroom and are rewarded by filling an unexplored missing piece of themselves,”says Goldenberg.

Alongside its numerous art offerings PMAC boasts a large number of adult music ensemble opportunities.  For those new to their instrument there is The New Horizons Band and Beginner Band and the Adult Chamber Strings which offer beginner and intermediate level band experience for adults. For those well versed in their instrument there is a range of options from a Bluegrass Ensemble to Jazz Combos and the Brewery Lane Big Band, with many more in between.

“Playing in the PMAC band and flute choir has been an amazing experience. These ensembles have boosted my music skills and confidence in playing with others, as well as provided a fun evening away from home,” says student Kristin Peto, “I feel I would truly be lost if I didn't have these opportunities to play.”  PMAC’s adult ensembles are open to new members year round. Lessons are also available for those who are interested in joining in an ensemble but have no previous experience with an instrument.

With a record number of adult students already enrolling, PMAC is looking forward to offering even more adult classes upon moving to a new facility on Islington Street this summer. "Our growing faculty is creating a wealth of arts education opportunities for adults,” says executive director Russ Grazier, “and when we relocate to our new Islington Street building in Summer 2013, we'll be able to offer even more."
